Dental Implants Q & A

What is implant dentistry?

Implant dentistry is a field of dental surgery that involves the replacement of missing teeth with small, titanium posts called dental implants. These dental implants are surgically implanted into your jawbone, where they fuse with the bone and function just like a natural tooth root, stimulating your jawbone and providing a stable foundation on top of which Dr. Shine can place a crown, bridge, or dentures.

Why should I get dental implants?

Your mouth doesn’t function properly without all of its teeth, and missing teeth can lead to a number of different oral health problems, such as:

Bone loss

Your jawbone doesn’t receive stimulation in the areas where you’re missing teeth, which eventually leads to bone loss in that area.

Misaligned bite

When you have a hole in your smile caused by a missing tooth, your other natural teeth can easily shift out of place as they move toward the open space, which can throw off the alignment of your bite and lead to jaw issues like temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ).

Impaired appearance

Over time, the facial muscles around missing teeth begin to droop and sag, which can change the shape of your face and mouth and affect your overall appearance.

By mimicking the root structures of your natural teeth, dental implants prevent all of these problems from developing, while also improving your ability to chew and speak properly and enhancing the appearance of your smile.

Dental implants are also incredibly easy to care for. Because they function just like your natural teeth, they require no special tools or treatments to brush and floss. You simply take care of them just like the rest of your natural teeth!

How do I get dental implants?

Dr. Shine and her team install your dental implants in two or more office visits. On your first visit, she numbs the area around your missing tooth, makes a small surgical incision into your gum and jawbone, and affixes the implant in your bone socket. She then stitches up your gum and places a cap over the surgery site to protect it while it heals.

Within 3-9 months, the implant will fuse to your jawbone, at which point you’ll come back to Shine DDS for a second visit. If everything looks good, Dr. Shine will install a custom-designed crown or bridge on top of the implant, leaving you a smile that looks just as healthy and natural as it feels.
