Invisalign Q & A
What is Invisalign?
Invisalign is a revolutionary treatment that straightens your teeth and gets them into proper alignment. It’s a technologically modern alternative to traditional metal braces that works by using a series of clear, plastic retainers that gradually and gently shift your teeth into their proper place.
How does Invisalign work?
If you and Dr. Shine decide that Invisalign is right for you, the first thing she does is take impressions of your teeth, which she’ll either do with physical molds or a 3D scanner.
These impressions are then used to make a virtual model of your teeth in their current state, a model of your teeth in their target alignment, and a number of models in between, detailing the precise progression of your teeth as they move into alignment.
A series of clear, plastic retainers are then created for the various stages between your current and target alignment. You wear your Invisalign retainer whenever you’re not eating or brushing your teeth, and move on to the next retainer about every two weeks. Your teeth can reach their target alignment in as little as nine months, giving you a happier and healthier smile without the pain and inconvenience of traditional metal braces.
Why is Invisalign better than braces?
Over six million people worldwide have improved their smiles with Invisalign, and even more continue to do so every year. Invisalign has quickly become a popular alternative to traditional metal braces and orthodontic approaches for a number of reasons, such as:
Because Invisalign retainers are clear plastic, it’s nearly impossible for anyone to notice that you’re wearing them unless you point it out. You can straighten your teeth while still looking like you have your teeth, not a mouthful of metal.
Invisalign retainers are made of smooth plastic, so they don’t cut up the inside of your mouth like all of the pointy metal components of traditional braces
Because metal braces are permanently affixed to your teeth, you need to use special tools to brush and floss. With Invisalign, you simply remove the retainers and brush and floss like normal.
Invisalign tends to work much more quickly than traditional metal braces: up to 50% faster in some instances
Am I a good candidate for Invisalign?
Invisalign works best with mild to moderate dental misalignments, such as:
- Crowded teeth
- Widely spaced teeth
- Crooked or rotated teeth
- Relapse after treatment with braces
