Porcelain Fillings Q & A

What are dental fillings?

Dental fillings are an effective treatment for cavities caused by tooth decay.

Tooth decay happens when plaque is allowed to sit on your teeth for too long. Plaque contains certain acids that eat away at your enamel (the hard outer layer of your teeth), which creates a tiny hole, otherwise known as a cavity.

Cavities are small at first, but grow larger in size if left untreated. Untreated cavities can lead to further tooth decay, severe pain, and eventual tooth loss.

Dr. Shine uses dental fillings to treat cavities by clearing out the decayed portion of your tooth and “filling” in the space with a substance that hardens and protects the damage in your tooth. Dental fillings can be made from a number of different substances, including:

  • Gold
  • Silver (amalgam)
  • Composite resin
  • Glass ionomer
  • Porcelain

Dr. Shine prefers using porcelain fillings to treat cavities for her patients at Shine DDS for the number of advantages they offer.

What are the advantages of porcelain fillings?

Porcelain fillings have many advantages in treating cavities, such as:

Natural-looking

The porcelain material used for fillings looks just like your natural teeth, so, unlike gold or silver fillings, any teeth that you have repaired with porcelain fillings will be virtually indistinguishable from the rest of your natural teeth.

Durable

Porcelain fillings are incredibly durable and can last much longer than other filling types. Composite fillings tend to last an average of 5-10 years, while amalgam fillings last about 10-15 years. Porcelain fillings, on the other hand, can last up to 20 years.

Stain- and abrasion-resistant

Porcelain fillings are more resistant to stains than other filling types, and they run less of a risk of developing micro-cracks and fissures that can lead to further decay within your tooth.

What’s the process for getting porcelain fillings?

Getting a filling is a quick and simple process that Dr. Shine and her team can complete in a single office visit.

First, Dr. Shine uses a local anesthetic to numb the tooth and the surrounding area. Next, she uses a drill, an air abrasion instrument, or a laser to remove all of the decay from the affected tooth.

Once all of the decay is removed, she cleans the bacteria and debris out of the cavity area and fills it with the porcelain material. The material only takes a few minutes to dry, and once it does, you’re all set!
