Orthodontics FAQs

Braces
  1. At what age should my child first see an orthodontist?
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children have their first orthodontic evaluation by age 7. Early assessment helps detect any developing issues and allows for timely intervention if needed.
  2. How long does orthodontic treatment usually take?
Treatment time varies depending on the complexity of the case but typically ranges from 12 to 24 months. Your orthodontist will give you a personalized estimate during your consultation.
  3. Do braces hurt?
You may experience some soreness or pressure when braces are first placed or adjusted, but it usually subsides within a few days. Over-the-counter pain relievers and orthodontic wax can help manage discomfort.
  4. Can I still play sports or musical instruments with braces?
Yes! Just make sure to wear a mouthguard during sports to protect your teeth and braces. Playing musical instruments may require some initial adjustment, but most patients adapt quickly.
  5. Are clear aligners as effective as braces?
Clear aligners are highly effective for many orthodontic cases, especially mild to moderate misalignments. However, braces may be recommended for more complex bite or jaw issues. Your orthodontist will guide you to the best option.
  6. How often do I need to visit the orthodontist during treatment?
Regular visits are usually scheduled every 4 to 8 weeks to monitor progress and make necessary adjustments.
  7. What happens if I don’t wear my retainer after treatment?
Not wearing your retainer can cause your teeth to shift back toward their original positions, undoing your treatment results. Wearing your retainer as prescribed is essential to maintaining your new smile.
  8. Will orthodontic treatment affect my speech?
You might notice slight changes in speech when braces or aligners are first applied, but these usually improve quickly as you adjust.
  9. How do I take care of my braces or aligners?
Brush and floss regularly, avoid sticky or hard foods with braces, clean aligners daily, and follow your orthodontist’s care instructions to keep your appliances in good shape.
  10. Is orthodontic treatment covered by insurance?
Many dental insurance plans provide partial coverage for orthodontic treatment. It’s best to check with your provider and your orthodontic office to understand your benefits and payment options.
